Kori Atiomic Power Plant complex.

The Korean government is determined to build two more atomic power plants-kori 5th and 6th power plant at the Kori atomic power plant complex.
The location of the power plant happens to be the original habitat of kori salamander.
Today Korea already has 18 power plants with the 19th one is under construction with a capacity of 17,353 MW , the 6th biggest in the world. Yet Korea wants to build 16 more new atomic power plants by 2020 including kori 5th and 6th power plants.
In the vicinity of Kori that is Kijang-gun, Busan-si, there are already 4 atomic power plants. They have been generating power for the past 28 years. The first Kori atomic power plant started commercial generation in 1976.
Wolsung atomic power plant is only about 100 km away from Kori atomic power plant complex.

The new power plants will be constructed between Wolsung and Gori 5th atomic power plants. Korean government is planning to build 7th and 8th Kori atomic plants and the 5th, 6th,7th and 8th new Wolsung power plants-total of 16 atomic power plants will be built - all within 300 kms!
Local people and environmental NGO's organized demonstrations and anti-atomic power plant campaigns. In a survey done in 1966, 66% local residents said they were against the building of new atomic power plants.
Ulsan area is considered to be geologically unsafe and that means that the new atomic power plants will be built in geologically unstable area and will be a global threat.
But the Korean government has gone ahead with the construction of the 5th and 6th atomic power plants.
Even before the plans were approved by the environment council , the contracts were signed.
Last January 2004, the environment ministry approved the plans but approval is awaited from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Energy and Safety and from the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The Nuclear Power plant site is the only habitat of the kori salamander

Prof. Yang Seo Young of Inha University brought the issue of Kori salamander to the attention of Green Korea. Kori Salamander or Hynobius yangi is a distinct specie from Salamander-Hynobius leechi.
Kori Salamander exists only in Kori and that is why it is called Kori salamander . Their shape is similar to ordinary salamander but they have distinct teeth structure, eggs and are transparent yellow in color.
Since 1997 Kori salamander is reported in Korea. At that time many scholars thought it was a mutation but after general reach they knew it was not a mutation but it was new salamander.

Kori salamander breeds only in isolated area.
Constant inbreding in isolated areas is the only way in which kori salamander multiplies. Protection of its original habitat is the only way of ensuring the protection of kori slamander from extiction.
Unlike the several species that can be found in salamanders, kori salamander does not have many species. It has only one specie and one habit.
Today Korea has 4 different kinds of salamander including Kori salamander. Salamander is a very important amphibian and unique to the natural swamps.
We are trying to protect the habitat of Kori Salamander but our voice is so small and we need your support.
During the Sydney Olympics, the Australian government changed the venue of the proposed gymnasium because it did not want to disturb the habitat of the green and golden frog.
Please join hands in our struggle to save the kori salamander from extinction. Please write letters to the Korean government not to destroy what little remains of Korean animal and plant diversity.

What You Can Do!

Save Korea Kori Salamander and Stop atomic power plants construction. Dear Minister of Environment , Kyul-Ho Kwak
I'm writing on behalf of the OOO, to express our support and solidarity for the Korean environmental NGOs in their efforts to oppose the atomic power palnts project in Kori area.
One of the rarest salamander species kori salamander is faced with extinction because of the Kori Power plant complex building plan.
Kori is the original habitat of this salamander and its extinction is a possibility we urge you to protect the salamander and consider it as a valued bio-diversity asset of the Republic of Korea.
Korean people are consuming too much energy from the nuclear power plants but building nuclear complex is danger to the entire planet. Warm water from the power palnts will destroy the ocean bio-diversity. But building nuclear coplex is danger to the entire earth and warm water from power palnts will distory the ocean biodiversity.

I hope the Korean government will make a wise decision keeping in mind the well being of the future generation.

Yours sincerely,
September 23, 2004
