Recently, there are far more infants and babies who suffer from asthma than are expected. In 2005, Democratic Labor Party announced that twenty six point six children at age of between zero and four every a hundred had been troubled with the asthma. It means that one fifth of them were sick with that. It seems that the number of babies who are ill with that has been increasing gradually for the percentage of babies who came across a child asthma rose by 16.7%

However, the asthma is not related with only infants and babies. In Korea, the number of patients with that amounts to approximately two point twenty seven million which is equal to 4.7% of total population (in the year 2004). Since the mid 1980's, the number of asthma patients had increased rapidly, and it seemed to rise steadily. Moreover, it came to double digit of 12.8% in 2004.

Even though the accurate cause of asthma has not been known yet, environmental pollution like air pollution has been considered as the factor of the dynamic increase of asthma since the 1980's. As asthma is regarded as the most typical index of air pollution, the higher the pollution level of ozone and minute dust, the higher the rate of child asthma and hospitalization for asthma.

WHO(World Health Organization) suggested that 30~40% of asthma and 20~30% of every respiratory disease be due to air pollution. The Ministry of Environment in Korea announced in February that 19.8% of total population resided in the place where minute dust level exceeded 70㎍/㎡ on the average of year (according to a document based on the measurement for 3 years from 2002 to 2004). Also, 65.9% of them inhabited the region which was exposed to over 150㎍/㎡ of the level on the average of day.
Once we are exposed to minute dust it is accumulated inside of our body, and it does damage though the permissible level. It means that it is possible for seven tenths of people to suffer from respiratory diseases like lung cancer and asthma according to the material suggested by The Ministry of Environment.

The document about minute dust concentration level(PM10) in each local government of Seoul from 1995 to 2004 is more serious. The level(PM10) in most region exceeded the average yearly permissible level far more. Considering that it can have an effect on the health though below permissible level, the level of that in every region was over 50㎍/㎡ which was suggested by WHO guide line 2000, and it recorded around 100㎍/㎡, for example, 92㎍/㎡ in Gangbuk-gu, 92㎍/㎡ in Dobong-gu, 96㎍/㎡ in Dongdaemun-gu in the year of 1995, 91㎍/㎡ in Dongdaemun-gu, 1996, 95㎍/㎡ in Jungnang-gu, 1999, 94㎍/㎡ in Jongno-gu, 2000, 98㎍/㎡ in Gangnam-gu(Daechi-dong), 2002, 92㎍/㎡ in Guro-gu(Gungdong), 96㎍/㎡ in Jung-gu.

It is possible that air pollution is regarded as the cause of respiratory disease like asthma, but there is no asthma patient so far who is suggested that the cause of  it be air pollution. It is because the patient is responsible for finding that.
The nation is obliged to make people reside healthily in clean air, but when we suffer from an illness because of polluted air, that it is our responsibility of finding the factor of disease and bearing mental, physical, and economic difficulties caused by disease is our stern reality. A measure in a state level which can find the cause of an environmental illness like asthma and relieve mental, physical, and economic damage of the patient is demanded.
