Mainly formed of evergreens 80 to 150 years-old, the 3,000 pyong forest was designated as a forest reserve by the Environment Ministry due to its high ecological value. The river in the area also serves as a home to precious animals and fish such as otters, salmon and sweet-smelt. One pyong equals 3.3 square meters.
The lower-layer vegetation of the forests became all but ruined due to the waste dumped by the military camp over the last 30 years. GKU had jointly monitored the level of environment pollution in the area with the Uljin District Office for one year. GKU called for a detailed environment survey of the region and demanded clean-up measures be carried out to restore the ecology.
